Where is your studio located?
Most sessions are shot at a location that we will select together. During your consultation I will guide you through selecting the best location for your family.
The indoor studio is located in Conroe, TX. We are off of 45 and 336. Near our studio we have a large park that allows for lots of room for kids to run, hide behind trees and great locations for outdoor images. If you would like to come by to check out our images and products, give us a call!
I have a huge list of go-to locations in the Houston/Woodlands area that I love and I’m always open to new ideas as well. And of course, my favorite sessions are those held right in your own home, where everyone is comfortable and relaxed. Once your session is booked, tell me what kind of feel you want your images to have or let me know which images speak most to you on my website and we can determine the best location for your session. I have a home studio where most babies under 12 months are shot. However, newborn sessions are always held within your home.
Some locations will require a travel fee, as they are farther away for me to travel. So it will always be cheaper for you to do locations in or around the Woodlands area. Some locations also may require permits. I will let you know which locations these are before you select a location.
What are your rates and prices?
Premium sessions have a $150 session fee. Packages start at $450 on weekends and the typical client usually invests about $800.
We would like to invite you to come into the studio and do a consult. This will allow me to show you our custom products, slideshows of our images, discuss your needs and how we can exceed your expectations. We believe that albums and wall fine art are the most important purchases. We find that these end up being family heirlooms, not CDs. So we like going through our pricing with our clients to showcase the things that make us unique.
How long does this process take?
If you are looking for an immediate session, the process for a custom portrait session can take around a month, depending on your schedule and my workload. While it may seem like an investment of time, the end results are well worth it! Here’s a timeline for a typical session:
Week 1 – booking, planning, and getting ready for the session
Week 2 – the session itself
Week 3-4 – you’ll receive a phone call from me telling you that your photos are ready to view at the studio. You will come and make your selections at the viewing
1-4 weeks after your viewing your final order will arrive and I will either ship it to you or you can come pick it up.
Do you photograph weddings?
Yes! Please visit our wedding website at lovestoriesbykara.com
How did you get started?
While I may have started my passion for photography during middle school, I didn’t really get into it until my little boy was born. My husband took maternity portraits of me at 8 months, which is where the idea of a studio began. My little angel was born in 2009, after 5 years of infertility. I didn’t want to take my little one to the mall for portraits, so I started to offer in-home family and newborn portraits. A year later, I quit my job and started my studio full time. Most of my clients have read my infertility story and book me because they connect with it. I love meeting new moms and hearing their stories!
I do a consultation with every one of my clients before their session, during which we will discuss clothing options.
Do you have props or sets that we can use?
Yes! We always bring fur throws and wraps to every newborn session. If you would like another type of prop, please let us know during your consultation! We always encourage you to include props that are special to you and your family. If you received a beautiful hand made blanket at your baby shower, let’s use it! Or if you have a cradle that has been passed down from generation to generation, pull it out! We want to incorporate things that mean something to you. Your images will mean so much more to you!
For family/children’s sessions we do sometimes have props depending on the theme. If you have an idea, let us know! We love making dream sessions a reality.
When should we get maternity portraits done?
I usually try to do maternity photos in the 3rd trimester (late 8th month). But we can do them anytime and multiple times.
How do I schedule my newborn photo session when I don’t know exactly when baby will be born?
Once you have booked your session I will take your estimated due date and block off some time around that (usually the week after). When your baby makes his or her entrance, contact me as soon as you can and we will set a specific date and time from there. I ask that newborn sessions be held within 10 days of birth. That is when you’re going to get the most cooperation for all those adorable newborn poses. If you have missed the 7-10 day old window, don’t worry! We can do lifestyle newborn sessions up to a month after birth.
Do you offer a “Baby’s First Year” package?
I do! It is called Tippy Toes. It contains 3 sessions within your babies first year, at anytime time within that year. There are no restrictions on those sessions. They can be family sessions, just the baby, mommy and baby, etc. Most of my clients choose to do a 6 month, 1 yr and family session. We have amazing products custom to Tippy Toes. Come in and see how cute they are!
I’m nervous about dealing with the digital files. Will you tell me how to print them and where to go to get prints made?
Of course! I provide very simple instructions along with my recommendations of where I suggest to print your files, on your CD.
What size can I print the images?
When I sell my digital files, they are high resolution images. We ask if you print anything over 8×10 that you do it through us so that we can guarantee the quality of your wall art.
Yes! We offer a variety of custom products such as announcements, albums, canvases and heirloom boxes. When you come in for your viewing appointment we can help you design the products you would like.
What is Expecting a Miracle/The Miracle Project?
Expecting a Miracle by Kara Powell Photography is a book that was created to fill a void in the publishing market. We wanted to create something to bring everyone who is affected by infertility in any way together. We spoke with 15 families and documented their stories, while also giving them the gift of images of their families. They have all built beautiful families after going through infertility. Whether they chose to adopt or go to medical measures, families were born. Our hope for this book is that we can help other families through this difficult journey. Even if it is just by showing that there is a bright spot at the end of the tunnel, that is enough. For most of us, it did take awhile, so please keep a positive outlook. If one door is shut, another one will be opened. Families are born in all kinds of ways these days. We hope you enjoy reading about these beautiful families and photos. And we do hope that your journey is fruitful at the end, whatever the outcome might be. Volume I of the book can be purchased as a paperback from Amazon and as an e-book from Barnes and Noble. Volume II can be purchased in soft or hard cover from Blurb.
